Boys Camp – Week One

The campers have arrived, and we have been busy with the business of camp.  This is the fun part…  We have over 100 campers here now and our dining hall is alive at meals, camp is full of activity, and programs are underway.  We have also had the weather on our side, which has been nice, although we are expecting a thunderstorm to pass through at some point today – these are always fun and exciting!

So far this week I have been on a 2-day overnight with the CIT’s which was interesting, as well as joining cabins for cabin nights at the various swimming holes and meeting with our second year CIT’s to check in with them and their first impressions of life as a cabin counsellor.  I have spoken to the CIT’s about what it means to be a staff member and role model, and what they remember form being a camper, as well as dealt with the usual homesickness and related issues.  Somehow paperwork has also become a big part of my day, and I am always busy.  There is always time for a game of ping pong or a story in a cabin at night though!

Camp is going well and the campers are all having a great time as usual.  Our new one-week campers arrived yesterday and are already settled in and happy.  I think they are going to be a great bunch of campers!  They will have a special program which we are still figuring out, but we have time as today we began our special program around the 4th July.  This will run over three days and includes a social with Camp Nokomis, our sister camp up the island and a range of special camp-wide activities and competitions.  While the 4th July isn’t as significant to me as it is to almost everyone else at camp, I still get behind it and Righter, our program director does a good job of making sure things run smoothly and everyone has a lot of fun.

My Cabin

My Cabin

This is where I live for 4 months of the year…  This photo was taken from the shoreline, and as you can see my cabin is one of the closest to the waters edge.  I also have one of the best views as you can see…  This shot includes the main dock and our 50’ launch ‘MV Bear’ – the one boat at camp I have yet to drive… I’m not going to lie, it kinda scares me…

Time to get back to the fun of camp.  Check back in a few days for more stories about our 4th July celebrations and maybe some photos…
